English Intent
At Gatcombe Park Primary School, we aim to develop children as readers, writers and linguists who demonstrate these characteristics:
- Speak and write fluently, so that they can communicate their ideas and emotions to others with an increasingly confident command of the spoken and written word.
- Understand that speaking and listening go hand in hand, are equal in importance, and that throughout society, being able to communicate effectively as a speaker and a listener will support social, emotional, intellectual, cultural and spiritual development for all.
- Read easily, fluently and with good understanding.
- Read often and widely for both pleasure and information, knowing it will develop social, emotional, intellectual, cultural and spiritual awareness of themselves and others.
- Be excited to broaden their vocabulary and take command of grammar and linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language.
- Appreciate our rich and varied literary heritage.
- Write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their use of language and style for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences.
- Speak confidently when demonstrating to others and participating in debate, remembering that listening is always a key part of presentational and discursive speaking.
- Use discussion in order to learn, they should be able to elaborate and explain clearly their developing understanding and ideas.
